I have an old workshed that I use on occasion. It’s a nice little shed, but the only problem is that because it isn’t insulated, it can’t get quite chilly and drafty inside during cold nights. In this situation, a traditional convection space heater just wouldn’t be the right choice for heating because it would be very energy efficient. What I needed was a radiant heater, so that’s exactly what I got. After researching many different makes and models of radiant heaters, I decided to go with the Optimus H-5210 Infrared Quartz Radiant Heater.
What I Like About This Infrared Heater
Energy Efficient – For drafty buildings and rooms, it is much more cost effective to use a radiant heater than a conventional ceramic or oil heater. The reason is because those types of heaters heat the air in the room, and in areas where cold breezes are blowing the warm air out, they just aren’t very effective. A radiant heater, on the other hand, does not heat the air. Instead, it transfers all of its heat directly to the target, be it a person or an object, while essentially “bypassing” the air. So no matter how breezy it gets, you will still feel the full intensity of the heat from this infrared heater, which means no wasted heat and no wasted energy.
Safe – This heater is very safe to use. It has an automatic shut-off mechanism that will cause it to immediately turn itself off if it is ever knocked over. It also has a safety grill in the front to prevent anyone from accidentaly touching the heating elements, the housing always remains cool, and there’s even a built in mechanism that prevents it from overheating. For people with children and/or pets, these safety features are an absolute requirement.
Heat Settings – The Optimus H-5210 has two heat settings: 400 watts (low) and 800 watts (high). I find that being able to adjust between the two is very useful because it allows me to save money by turning it down to the low setting when I only need a little bit of heat. On the high setting, the heat is very intense – it’s actually quite impressive how much heat this little thing can give off!
Light and Portable – Personally, I don’t like moving around heavy appliances, so the fact that this heater is so light and easy to move from one place to another makes it that much more better. The integrated carrying handle was a nice touch as well.
What I Don’t Like About This Infrared Heater
Cold spots – This infrared heater was not designed to heat an entire room. Unless you’re positioned right infront of it, you won’t feel the heat at all. It’s great for when you’re seated at a desk or a workbench, but if you plan to move around a lot, this may not be the best option.
Very Bright – I did find the bright, orange glow to be slightly distracting at first, but once you get used to it, you really won’t even notice it at all. It’s a minor issue, but it’s something you should be aware of.
Is the Optimus H-5210 Infrared Quartz Heater worth buying? The answer is a resounding yes! As far as radiant heaters go, the Optimus H-5210 is, without a doubt, the best out there. It’s a very popular heater on most online merchant sites (they no doubt sell a ton of these). You really can’t go wrong here, and if you’re just looking for a cheap infrared space heater for supplemental heating, then this more than qualifies.
