portable infrared quartz heaters
Hello there! My name is Michael and welcome to my best infrared heater reviews blog. I am a geodetic surveyor by trade, but I have a lot of knowledge about infrared space heaters as I’ve used quite a few of them in my time. Everything from tiny dish heaters to high-end 1500 watt infrared room heaters, you name it, I’ve used it. But over the years, I’ve learned which ones are the best and which ones just plain suck and are ineffective. In fact, that’s why I created this blog; to let others know which ones they should buy and which ones to avoid, and to give general tips and advice about infrared heaters in general so that you can get the most out of your infrared heater.

So feel free to look around. You’ll find articles, guides and other information that will help you find the best infrared heater for your needs, and, of course, my top recommendations near the bottom of this page.

Note: The marjority of this page consists of buying guides and tips on how to select the right infrared heater, as well other information about infrared heaters in general. Although I do recommend that you read everything on this page, if you just want to know what the best infrared heaters are then you can go straight to the list of my top recommendations by clicking HERE.

Types Of Infrared Heaters

There are 2 main types of infrared heaters:

Infrared Radiant Heaters – These heaters are good for spot heating and they don’t use very much energy. They’re small and portable and can be plugged into any nearby wall socket, allowing for easy and convenient use in any room of your house. They also heat up very quickly, reaching its maximum temperature in literally minutes, so you will get instant heat the moment you turn it on.

The downside of these heaters is that they tend to lack heating power, which can be an issue on those very cold winter days when you need all the heat that you can get. They’re decent and can provide supplemental heat when used in conjunction with your central furnace, but they just aren’t powerful enough for you to rely on as your sole source of heat.

Infrared Room Heaters – Infrared room heaters are like the bigger brothers of the radiant heaters described above. They have much greater heating power and can easily heat up a 1000 square foot room, and some can even heat an area of up to 1500 sq. ft.! Could you use a heater like that? I bet you could and there are many millions of people across the country who could benefit from the use of one of these. But many people just aren’t aware that such heaters that can heat up so much space exist. And it’s a shame because they are losing money every time they have to turn up the temperature on the thermostat of their main furnace when they could’ve just bought an infrared room heater and saved money on their electric bills.

One of the best things about these heaters is that they can be plugged into any standard wall outlet, and the reason is because they only use 1,500 watts of electricity, unlike your central heater which can use over 5,000 watts. Now do you see the potential they have to save you enormous amounts of money on your heating bills this winter?

Factors to Consider

When choosing an infrared heater, you need to ask yourself a few questions that will help you pick an infrared heater that is best suited for your needs.

1. How much square footage can it heat? Infrared room heaters can heat up anywhere from 800 to 1,500 square feet of space. Infrared radiant heaters don’t heat an area – they heat only what’s directly in front of it. If you need to heat a large room then you should strongly consider getting one of the more powerful models of infrared room heaters. If you only need to heat yourself and you know that you will be stationary for long periods of time – like at a desk – then a small infrared radiant heater may suffice.

2. How big/heavy is it? The bigger and heavier it is, the more cumbersome it will be to move around. You may also want to take into consideration how much space you have available in your room. Sure, you may get it to fit somewhere in your room, but it could become an annoying obstacle for you. So if you’re tight on space, compactness should definitely be high on your list of desirable qualities you want in an infrared heater.

3. What is the life expectancy? Infrared quartz tubes/bulbs (the heating element that produces the infrared heat) don’t last forever. They typically give out after so many years of use. Their lifespan will vary greatly depending on the brand. Some brands use quartz tubes that last up to 60,000 hours, while some are only rated to last for 10,000 hours. Most manufacturers provide this information so be sure to check to make sure that you’re getting a heater that has a rated lifespan near the higher end of that range rather than the lower end.

4. What kind of warranty does it have? A longer warranty will greatly minimize the risk associated with buying an infrared heater. Almost all high quality infrared heaters have factory warranties of at least a year. Three year warranties are typical and some even offer lifetime warranties albeit rare.

Advanced Features

The best infrared heaters should not only provide you with efficient heating and warmth, it should also deliver other benefits. Here are some additional capabilities that most top-of-the-line infrared heaters on the market today come equipped with:

Built-in Air Purifier – Virtually all infrared room (cabinet) heaters come with an air cleaner that is built into the device. The most advanced models allow the air purifier to be operated independantly of the heater. Additionaly, most come with easy-to-clean, lifetime filters that can be conveniently removed from the rear, washed or vacuumed, and reinserted with little effort or difficulty. Most people will find that they have quite a bit of dust, dander, and other impurities in the air inside their homes, so this is, in my opinion, a must have feature.

Built-in Humidifier – Some of the more high end infrared heaters come with integrated humidifiers. During the winter, there can be a tendency for the air inside your home to become quite dry. A humidifier will correct this problem by bringing the humidity level up to a more comfortable level, which the device accomplishes by releasing small vapors of water into the air. Unlike the other features, some may view this as extraneous and perhaps reduntant as they may already own a standalone humidifier. However, for those who don’t and could benefit from one, buying an infrared heater that has one can be both a money and a space saver.

Remote Control – Most modern infrared heaters come with a remote control. The convenience that a RC can provide is simply priceless. Sure you may not need to adjust your heater very often, but it’s still nice to be able to do so from the comfort of your sofa or couch.

The features listed above (with the exception of the humidifier) come standard in most high quality infrared heaters. You may not require all of these features, in which case, you can save money by buying a cheaper model that doesn’t include one or more of these features.

Which Infrared Heater Should I Buy?

So now that you have read my buying guide to infrared heaters, I hope that you have somewhat of an idea of what type of infrared heater you’re looking to buy. If you’re still not sure though, here’s more guidance for you. The following tips/advice is the result of years and years of my own experience with buying and using infrared heaters. So here they are:

How much will it cost me? Although it is very important to take into consideration price – nobody likes overpaying – however, like the saying goes, you get what you pay for. And that adage holds true, even when you’re talking about space heaters. I understand some of you may not have the funds to buy the best heater out there, but I still cannot reiterate enough how important it is to get a quality space heater. Here is my main reason for believing this:

Infrared heaters should be considered long-term investments, not something you have to replace every year. I personally own and use many infrared heaters that I have used for 5+ years without any issues at all. They all run just as well as they did the day I purchased them. A high quality infrared heater can and should last you several years. Look at it this way: Take the cost of a $200 infrared room heater and divide it over the span of, let’s say, 3 years. That only comes out to about $5 per month, which is practically nothing and more than worth it to have a nice cozy and warm home. And that’s not even taking into consideration the amount of money you will save on your electric bill every winter. If you buy a second-rate space heater, you will regret it later on down the road. Look more long-term and get something that you know will last you a long time.

Now that that’s been said, let’s consider which type of infrared heater to buy. Do you need an infrared radiant heater or an infrared room heater? My own opinion is that you should buy an infrared room heater (a.k.a. wooden “cabinet” heaters) rather than an infrared radiant heater because, quite frankly, they’re just more effective at heating your room/house. I can tell you from personal experience that they give off a lot more heat, and I don’t get those cold spots like I do with radiant heaters. And, personally, I just like the way they look – they match the rest of my home decor much better. Also, the bright orange “radiant” light can be a bit distracting at times, which isn’t a problem with the infrared room heaters.

My Top Picks for 2017

Let’s face it, there’s a huge number of different brands and models of infrared heaters for sale in the marketplace, and all of them are being advertised as being the “best infrared heater”. As a shopper, it can be very difficult trying to wade through the jungle of sales pitches and marketing mumbo jumbo to find the truth. Well you won’t find the truth on manufacturer and merchant sites, I’ll tell you that. The only place you’ll get it from are people who have actually used a good number of different types, models, and brands of infrared heaters, and are therefore capable of comparing the performance and qualities of the various heaters out there – people like myself.

Drawing upon my knowledge and first-hand experience with numerous different types and brands of infrared heaters, I’ve created my own personal list of the best infrared heaters for sale in the marketplace. These infrared heaters all receive my highest recommendation. Most of these are quite well known and popular models and brands of infrared heaters so you really can’t go wrong with any of them.

Best Overall Infrared Heater

This is, without a doubt, the best electric infrared heater on the market. It has all of the advanced features that you would want in a top-of-the-line infrared heater. Built-in-air filter with a removable, lifetime filter, durable and powerful quartz heating elements, automatic timer and thermostat, auto energy saving features, infrared remote control, lightweight and portable, and, to top it all off, it is super quiet.

I have been using this infrared heater for years, and it works just as well now as it did on the first day I bought it. It is built extremely well – excellently designed and constructed. It is a very high quality infrared heater. I especially liked that it came with an air purifier built into it (I have a bit of a pet dander problem in my house) as it allowed my to save money by not having to buy one separately. If you only have the funds to buy one infrared heater, then this is definitely the one you should buy.

Best Value Infrared Room Heater

DrHeaterDR998Dr Heater Elite Series DR-998 Infrared Heater

The DR-998 is a very versatile piece of machinery. It is not only a fantastic heater, but it can also take on the duties of 3 other commonly used household appliances, namely your air purifier, humidifier, and summer fan. And the best part is that they can all be operated independantly, so, for example, if you desire to use only the air purifier, it will allow you to do that. I feel that this infrared heater represents a fantastic value considering its price – it’s only moderately more expensive than other similar heaters that don’t include all of the other additional features. This is one of my top recommendations and you can’t go wrong with this one at all.

Best Infrared Radiant Heater

OptimusH5210Optimus H-5210 Infrared Quartz Radiant Heater

One of Optimus’ most popular and best selling space heaters, the Optimus H-5210 is a superb infrared radiant heater. It is extremely quiet, light and portable, very safe to use, and is one of the most energy efficient space heaters you can buy. It has a maximum wattage setting of 800 watts, but it feels like it pumps out a lot more heat than other similar radiant heaters that I’ve used. Another great thing about these heaters is that they only take a few minutes to heat up – probably 1.5 to 2 minutes at the most. They also don’t give off any odor, deplete oxygen in the air, nor make any crackling/humming noises whatsoever. I use one of these little guys for supplemental heat in my computer room when it gets very cold, and I must say, this heater has never let me down.
